are at it again. This year we are walking in the Orlando Susan G. Komen for the Cure and Goldie herself (now officially a breast cancer survivor -YAY) will be walking the 5k with us.

I’m helping to raise money by holding a raffle.

Oh what a “Tangled” web

It has to be the months and months of watching cake and cupcake shows that has led up to this. That’s right, we watch them all, Cake Boss, Cupcake Wars, Ultimate Cakes, Food Network Cake Challenge, all of them, we’re hooked. The only problem is that when it came to what Ellie wanted for a birthday cake this year (her 6th – where does the time go?) she expected Mom to deliver a Tangled cake complete with a tower a la the concoctions we see on the TV.

I took a deep breathe and tucked into the task. After all, we were the only ones that would see it so it really didn’t matter, did it? I was a bit scared of the whole tower thing so I made Ken do it. I gave him a tray of rice crispy treats and a dowel rod and said go to it. I proceeded to make the vanilla cake (Ellie doesn’t like chocolate) using a Magnolia Bakery recipe I found - http://www.food.com/recipe/magnolia-bakerys-vanilla-birthday-cake-and-frosting-139518. The only complaint online was that it tended to taste like a sugar cookie. No complaint here, my family loves sugar cookies. I used my own classic butter cream icing recipe.

Ellie cut out and placed all the flowers and I set her task of building the boulders (something to keep her busy since she was home on the day I put it all together).

I have to say there were no complaints around here, in fact very little talking at all, just eating.

Butterfly part 2

The second one actually hatched this morning. I wasn’t sure if he was going to because his cacoon had fallen from where he made it but he did and we released him this afternoon. What a fun thing to do. I think we will do it again next year.

Floored

For some reason we thought it would be a good idea to see what was underneath that very ugly 1970s kitchen floor we had. Since we there were no real cabinets to be removed and we were about to install a new dishwasher, we thought let’s have a look. Our hope was to find the original hardwood floors from when the house was built in 1928 (this is what we saw when we torn up the floor in the pantry). That is what we found until we got about half way across the kitchen floor where we found a big piece of plywood and some other flooring that had very old termite damage. So we had to go to plan B. The problem was we didn’t really have a plan B.

Plan B turned out to be getting a quote on new hardwood floors instead a quote to have the ones in there refinished like we were hoping. It was actually less than we were expecting so we did it.

So for the last two and a half weeks our kitchen has been a building zone, seven actual days of work. It took two days to pull up the floor (poor Ken about broke his back doing this),

two days to put down the new wood and finish around the doors and steps,

and three days to sand and put the finish down.

Now we have a beautiful new kitchen floor. Tonight, when it is dry, we can put everything back into the kitchen and we can have our dining room and the rest of the house back. I am so ready to have a bit of organization again.

Meanwhile Sadie is growing and becoming more alert and funny by the day.

Flurry

The last two weeks have been a flurry of activity.

Ellie and I did Dino week at a local musem.

Ken went hiking and camping for five days in Joshua Tree National Park (to see all of his adventure check out his pics at http://www.flickr.com/photos/kjpanko/sets/72157614345535437/detail/ ).

We have been working to get Ellie’s and the new baby’s rooms ready (we still work to do in both rooms but they are coming together).

Lastly we woke up this morning to a winter wonderland of snow that is continuing to fall as I write this post.

Red Velvet

Since it is VDay and I am preggers, I decided that I needed to finally try out Mary Louise’s famous Red Velvet Cake recipe. I made cupcakes instead ( I am taking a few to the midwives tomorrow to help get them out of the house) and even made the homemade butter cream icing according to the recipe.

I must say Ellie and I have already enjoyed a small taste of the fruits of my labor and Ellie called them yummy.
